A sovereign is “almost” 8 grams so to figure the “approximate” current spot value of a sovereign just times the current value (shown in orange) by 8.

For the “approximate” current spot value of a half sovereign simply times the current price (displayed in orange) by 4.

However before you scrap, or sell any sovereigns as scrap (for current spot value), its worth investigating if they are worth more then scrap. Because sovereigns are also collected by coin collectors (numismatists), if they are in good condition, are scarce/rare, or they have mint mark, they can be worth a big premium over melt.

So try and establish what you have. Take a look on eBay for similar graded and types of coins, or contact a trusted or BNTA coin dealer for a value.

Also if buying coins for more then their scrap price, remember condition as well as rarity is the key. If a coin is damaged it is probably only worth its scrap value as most collectors won’t want it for their collection. Their are many ways coins can be damaged and that is by being scratched, cleaned, mounted in pendants or necklaces, soldered, holed, or having had hard bumps 9rim bums) to the side. All these types of damaged coins won’t be worth much if any over scrap.
